In the fall of 1953, 13 members from Forest Lawn Baptist Church met to discuss starting a new church. Following successful revival services, the group was organized into a church. In 1954 the current property was purchased, and a basement building was constructed where services were held by Shermont’s first pastor, Rev. Voelker.

In 1957 additional classrooms were added; in 1960 a parsonage was begun and finished; and in 1964 the sanctuary was built. In 1976 a three-story educational building was completed.

In 1980 a lightning strike caught the church on fire, destroying the sanctuary. Under then pastor Rev. Curtis Hall, the church rebuilt and entered a new, larger sanctuary debt-free in 1981. Over the years various facility improvements have been made, additions to the property added, and notable growth has occurred.

Since its inception in 1953, Shermont has enjoyed 10 pastors, with Rev. Ryan Riley serving since 2007. Our church slogan is “Ordinary people serving an extraordinary God” and we continue to witness His hand at work in, among, and through us daily.

Our history demonstrates His faithfulness and blessings, and we desire to continue to give Him glory and grow His kingdom.
